Cambridge BYOB Ordinance Starts March 31st

The City of Cambridge Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) Ordinance takes effect March 31st, 2016 and affects retail establishments that provide a checkout bag to customers at the point of sale. Retail establishments such as grocery and convenience stores, pharmacies, restaurants, liquor stores, and other retailers must comply with this ordinance.

The purpose of the Ordinance is to reduce the use of disposable checkout bags by retail establishments. Under the ordinance, plastic bags with handles are prohibited. Any reusable, paper, or compostable bag with handles provided at the point of sale must charge a checkout bag charge minimum of $0.10/bag. Businesses must show this as the “Checkout Bag Charge” on the receipt and collect sales tax on each bag. Bags exempt from the Ordinance include produce bags, laundry, dry-cleaner and newspaper bags, and bags used to wrap meat or frozen foods.

Music Video: Dead Trains "County Road Bound/Mean Town Blues"

See Dead Trains February 22nd at Charlie's Kitchen, Harvard Square

Dead Trains, Boston’s self-proclaimed punk blues band, is a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, and maybe most likely went through a weird metal phase in high school. Primus meets Tigerman Woah, Dead Trains utilizes irregular chord progressions, swift tempo changes, and pulsing bass and guitar lines to create frantic, slightly unstable, rock and roll with a twangy swagger.

In anticipation of the upcoming 7-track LP, ‘Country Road Bound’ (set to be released later this month and featuring two previously recorded songs off of 2015's 32/20), Dead Trains has released a music video for the first single “County Road Bound/Mean Town Blues” (directed by Humar Miranda and originally premiered on Dying Scene) which is available to purchase on Bandcamp now.

Catch Dead Trains live on Monday, February 22nd with Lesser Knowns and The Shallow End Divers at Charlie's Kitchen in Harvard Square - $5 // 21+ with ID // 9PM (event details) and follow the band on Facebook for additional release information.

You can stream the garage rock track on Soundcloud now and see the band live on February 26th with The Evil Streaks, The Devil's Twins and Damnation at Ralph’s Diner in Worcester (sponsored by Polar Seltzer // event details) and be on the lookout as the band visits WMBR’s Pipeline for a live in-studio session on March 15th.

Save Ends Signed to Black Numbers, 'Bout to Release 'Hug Your Friends' EP, Will Make You Feel More Feelings

Freak flags will fly - Save Ends to release highly anticipated EP.

One of the O'Brien's the cities best feel-feelings band, Save Ends, has signed to Black Numbers Records, joining friends Great Lakes USA, Choke Up, and most recently, Fucko. To celebrate, the band will be releasing the 'Hug Your Friends' EP, follow up to 2013's 'Warm Hearts, Cold Hands' (Tiny Engines).

In anticipation, NPR Music has released the first single to the 4-song EP entitled "I Fell Asleep", and the band released the record cover art, dedicated to a staple individual of the Boston punk scene.

From the band's Facebook page:

The photo was taken by our friend Adam Haut, one of the best humans to ever live, who passed away in August. He walked dogs for a living and would take tons of great nature photos on his walks. This shot is one of those pictures. The Boston punk community, and humanity at large, lost an amazing person that day. His passing really put a lot of things into perspective. Especially how important it is to show those close to you how much they mean. Hug your friends, everybody.

True Story:
'Hug Your Friends' will be out later this year, get your pre-order on here.

Director Ben Phillippo Teams Up with Dream Pop Band Gem Club to Create Tragic Poetry

Watch the official music video for "Speech of Foxes" now.

Airy and placid, Gem Club’s “Speech of Foxes” is an example of how a simple song can be the perfect canvas for interpretation, and how the marriage of audio and visual can create the necessary ballast to a piece of work. “The track really resonated with me on a personal level,” Director Ben Phillippo explains. “I wanted to create visuals that explored loss in a symbolic way, depicting something poetic as well as tragic. I imagined a wooden man, and how vulnerable and fragile he might be if exposed to fire, and the concept grew from there.”

The wooden man evolved into weathered flesh and blood, as the main character (played by Jack Goldman) demonstrates how connected we are to memories and experiences in the official music video for “Speed of Foxes” off Gem Club’s 2014 ‘In Roses’ (Hardly Art). Both solemn and satisfying, we travel the journey of a man's life has he reflects on the past. “It snowed unexpectedly on the day, and we rolled with it-- I'm glad we did, because it took the drama up a notch,” Phillippo added.

Local artists interested in working with Ben and his team can find contact details at benphillippo.com.

Purchase ‘In Roses’ by Somerville dream pop band Gem Club at most online retailers including Bandcamp - $10 digital, $11 CD, $16 double vinyl with digital download code.

The Diabolical DiabloGato - Debut Full-Length Available Now

Get your copy of Diablogato's debute full-length now.

Sweet and salty. Naughty and nice. Basement show and lounge act. Diablogato's debut S/T full-length is a proper 11-song catalog of punk rock / rockabilly with a custom, diabolical twist.

Established in 2014, Diablogato has already been stirring up interest as a premier band at The Boston Tattoo Convention, The New England Shake-Up Car Show, and 2015’s Awesome Day Fest, and recently topping the polls over at Boston Emissions. And if it’s one thing we know, when a rockabilly band is involved, you come for the music but stay for the performance. “Stage presence is a big part of putting on a good show,” says frontman Drew Indingaro (ex-Lost City Angels, Cradle to the Grave). “We try to be aware of that and hope that we entertain. If you come to a Diablogato show, you’ll definitely see Johnny Custom climbing all over his upright bass.”

The 2015 record, recorded by Jack Younger at Watch City Studios in Waltham, MA and mastered by Nick Z. at New Alliance East in Cambridge, MA, is now available for purchase as a CD via the band’s website.

While the band has tentative plans to release a 7” in the next year, East Coast tour dates are already being put on the books. Can’t wait? Catch them as the special guest during night #2 of  the ‘Late Night on Lansdowne Street’ FREE SHOW at Bill’s Bar on Monday, December 28th with The Offseason and Neutral Territory (former Stereo State), presented by Mutiny on the Microphone and Radio BDC. Event details here.

Then After The Show, It's The After Party - ‘Late Night on Lansdowne’ December 27th+28th

Because we know you'll be in the area...

These internet radio hosts have created a late night, local music party on Lansdowne Street just for you.

Oh, and it’s free.

“I don’t think it’s a choice to keep your passion going to be honest with you. It’s a weird thing, a force that pulls you in. And then it defines you, and you don’t even question it.”

Mutiny on the Microphone and RadioBDC have announced a free, 2-night event entitled Late Night on Lansdowne featuring a nightly lineup of now trending bands along with special guests all happening at Bill’s Bar December 27th and 28th.

“With this year’s [Hometown Throwdown] theme being a throwback to The Rat, some people are talking about how the 'scene died’ when The Rat closed, or reminiscing about the past, thinking that our current set up just isn’t the same. I’d like to counter that argument with this showcase,” Mutiny on the Microphone founder and host Adam Blye explains.

“‘Late Night On Lansdowne’ pays homage to our experiences and excitement of discovering new music organically while attending shows. Back in the day you would get handed bags of swag after a show; flyers, pins, stickers, CDs of local bands of similar sound. Although that might not be the thing to do anymore, we can still connect listeners with music in a creative, natural way. It’s our job as curators to guide people to these bands.”

Both digital airwaves co-presenters are compromised of former terrestrial radio personal. With the fall of influencers like WBCN and WFNX, changing formats, shifting genres, closing clubs, and the looming fog of a bygone era in music, it’s easy to wonder how some people maintain their passion. “I don’t think it’s a choice to keep your passion going to be honest with you,” Blye confesses. “It’s a weird thing, a force that pulls you in. And then it defines you, and you don’t even question it.”

Participating 'Late Night On Lansdowne' bands are being announced daily, with night #1 already set to include The Bonnets (3 piece punkadelic band from Lyndonville, Vermont) and local favorites Bundles plus special guests yet to be revealed. The remaining bands for night #2 will be announced on the Facebook event page on December 10th and 11th. Both nights are FREE, 21+ with valid ID and entry is first come first served.

Follow Mutiny on the Microphone on Facebook and Twitter for additional information and take an interest in the event page to get automatic announcements, lineup details and more.

Song Premiere: “A Girl From Quincy” by Art Thieves

'For Free!' will be available for free download on December 31st.

It is with our unwavering pleasure that we present to you “A Girl From Quincy” by Art Thieves.

Working on their material under the radar, Bishop & Rook caught Art Thieves earlier this year in their natural South Shore habitat (RIP Beachcomber) and gave our stamp of approval. It was the band’s on stage chemistry and thoroughly entertaining live set that later earn them a spot in the Boston Scene Party Showcase.

“A Girl From Quincy” is off the band’s debut 10-track record entitled ‘For Free!’, available as a free digital download on December 31st. Listen to a few per-released songs on Soundcloud now. See Art Thieves on February 13th at O'Brien’s Pub in Allston with Warn the Duke (NYC), The Warning Shots, and You Scoundrel. Sorry, Too Busy Feeling Feelings: Mallcops’ 'The Funniest Joke You've Ever Told' is an Addiction

This is not abandonment. This is just your common sense. - "Ambulances" by Mallcops

"The lyrics always come first. 'The Funniest Joke You've Ever Told’ is the first part in a much larger story."

'The Funniest Joke You've Ever Told' is a record of monumental content. Put it on your iPod, listen to it on your way to work, and listen to it on your way home. Add it to your gym mix and run until your heart feels like it's about to explode. Listen to it when you're sober, and when you've had a few; and before you go to bed at night. Listen to it to feel something, to remember something, to regret something, and to justify something. Listen to it because Mallcops has perfectly articulated the most uncomfortable, awkward and emotionally vulnerable time in a relationship more than you ever could.

Video Premiere: Bundles - “Dead Reckoning”

Getting sounds in the Rubber Tracks studio. (image credit)

We’re excited to premier Bundles’ music video for “Dead Reckoning” off their soon-to-be-released record. The 2:26 video (created by John Schoeck and Mike Silva) highlights the band’s Converse Rubber Tracks experience back in August.

“We got to the studio around 11am and I think had finished basic tracking by 1pm and were out of there with a finished, mixed track by 5pm. The staff was super friendly and very easy to work with,” Bundles bassist Brain Jones recalls. The song was later re-mixed and mastered with the band’s producer, Dave Age (Favorite Atomic Hero) at his studio Union Digital.

“Dead Reckoning” is one of two tracks premiered by the band earlier this fall. Although talks have been initiated on how the record will be released, Bundles’ sophomore EP has yet to have an official release date. But, per Jones, the band would “love to chat” with anyone interested in working with the band.

See Bundles at ONCE in Somerville on November 20th and at the Quincy Sons of Italy for a benefit show on November 25th. Details below. Listen to a more in-depth recap of what went down in the Rubber Tracks studios via the band’s guest DJ episode on Mutiny on the Microphone podcast. Follow Bundles on Facebook and Twitter for additional show and release information.

The New Limits Release Live 'D.I.WHY' Recording

Recorded live in one take. It's like having a ska band in your house, but with a lot more elbow room.

Earlier this year, the 8-man Boston ska outfit The New Limits was invited to the WEMF studios to perform a set of new and old songs on the D.I.WHY segment, hosted by Andrew Lowery. The session resulted in a 5-song EP of one fluid, live recording that, in all honesty, sounds pretty damn good for an in-studio take and represents the integrity of The New Limits as a live act.

Live at WEMF’ is available on Bandcamp for free (at a name your price donation). While you're there, you can stream / purchase the band's debut EP 'Pressure Up' released in January of this year.

More than just the songs, D.I.WHY is about the process behind them and how music's better than your day job. Listen live Sundays from 2-4PM on WEMFRadio.com.

Bedroom Eyes' Sophomore Record ‘Honeysuckle’ Part of Midnight Werewolf Records’ “Triple Threat” Project

"...an exhilarating adrenaline rush and a neurological breakdown."

What is so versatile about the shoegaze genre is the heavy dependence on instrumental scores allows the listener to develop their own interpretation. Both dreamy and destructive, an exhilarating adrenaline rush and a neurological breakdown could be heard within one song.

A love child of dream pop and grunge rock with melodic vocals and driving dual guitars, Bedroom Eyes is as seductive and aggressive as you’d desire them to be with their 10-track second album ‘Honeysuckle’.

Stand out tracks: "Wild Sins", "Restless".
