It’s a new music kind of day. Amiright? Emerging from the depths of Allston with a press release soaked in puns, arrives the premiere of "Hold Me Down" off the 4-song debut EP '<i>Open Island</i>' by self-proclaimed marina rock band, <b>Beached Boy</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Comprised of singer/songwriter <b>Brendan Grafe</b>, <b>Kevin DeStefano</b> (<b>Bad Actors</b>), <b>Harley Cox </b>(<b>Choke Up</b>) and <b>Will Buiel</b> (<b>Kitner</b>), Beached Boy has taken Grafe’s acoustic emo material, backed it with a driving ensemble of pop punk origins and created an accelerated, scorched and scorned summer sound. Learn these lyrics because you’ll be shouting them alongside your friends at the next Beached Boy show.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let’s party. Check out 'em out during their record release show July 1st at <b>O’Brien’s Pub</b> in Allston featuring <b>Luau</b>, <b>Clever Girls </b>(VT), <b>Saccharine </b>and <b>Jeff Rowe</b> (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1950319821910800/" target="_blank">event details</a>). '<i>Open Island</i>' will be available via cassette and digital download June 30th via <a href="https://www.facebook.com/prospectrecords" target="_blank"><b>Prospect Records</b></a>. When a lead singer announces his side project but continues to produce songs written and performed by the same person, does it sound any different?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the past three EPs, five full-lengths and a total of nine years, <b>Stephen MacDonald</b> produced heavy, emotionally laden tracks as the frontman and primary song writer for Boston-based <a href="http://www.bishopandrook.com/2016/01/youve-got-to-stay-humble-when-youre.html" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">The Okay Win</a>. But when the band called it quits in 2016, MacDonald carried on and is now preparing for the release of his first solo record since 2008 ‘<i>Local Divide</i>’, out June 23rd. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>“I don't set out to make people sad, but I also don't want the songs to just fly over people's heads. I want them to feel something.”</i></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It was definitely a long time coming," MacDonald starts. "I don't mean that I was hoping it would end or anything, but it was just becoming more and more apparent that the band was competing with other life factors and wasn't always a main priority. Once it came to light that pretty much no one could focus on it anymore, it didn't feel right to continue using the name, so I decided to close that chapter and continue under my own name.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While The Okay Win was becoming more layered and sometimes moving at full speed sound-wise, leaving little room to make out subtle nuances or lyrics, “Stephen MacDonald” the singer/songwriter is a more intimate experience. “The Okay Win had become so busy musically at times, and I was all about that because I love bands like <b>Built to Spill</b>. Now though, I am really just connecting with artists like <b>Kevin Devine</b>, <b>Clem Snide</b>, <b>Pinegrove</b>, and <b>Pete Yorn</b> who have this real sense of purity and simplicity to their songwriting. Not to say that their songs are easy, but they feel effortless when they're played.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As part of a full band or on his own, MacDonald has inescapably branded his sound which consists mostly of poignant, complex and metaphorical lines that pierce your brain and invade your vulnerability, and listeners can expect this to continue on ‘<i>Local Divide</i>’.<br />
<br />
“As far as people's emotional reaction to my music, I try to steer clear of getting too wrapped up in it. If they're feeling something from it at all and it's connecting to something in their personal life, that's the ultimate goal. I don't set out to make people sad, but I also don't want the songs to just fly over people's heads. I want them to feel something or take something away,” MacDonald tells <b>Bishop & Rook</b>. “I know that my music can definitely come off as fairly melancholy at times. It's not always my intention, and part of it is due to my vocal style. I don't have much range, so it just kind of comes off that way.<br />
<br />
Music for me is my way to make sense of what is around me and what I am going through. It's a way of putting myself outside of my comfort zone and learning more about myself and the world. That's all I ever really set out to do when I write a song.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The members of Billerica’s <b><a href="http://www.bishopandrook.com/2015/08/video-premier-horse-mode-jazz-and-ipas.html" target="_blank">Horse Mode</a></b> harnessed the DIY spirit roughly six years ago with a gruff, 6-song demo and have since turned their passion project into a true hustle, scoring a recent recording opportunity at <b>Converse Rubber Tracks</b>, executing a 9-stop spring tour stretching from Brooklyn to Montreal and making a master decision that will keep the band competitive in the local music scene.</div>
<br />

<a name='more'></a><br />

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>“To be honest, you can only hear, "You guys should add vocals", so many times before you have to consider it.”</i></blockquote>
</center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although the band dabbled with vocals during live performances, Horse Mode was established as an “unconventional, instrumental rock and roll band”, recording their debut LP ‘<i><a href="https://horsemode.bandcamp.com/album/all-you-ever-talk-about-is-jazz" target="_blank">All You Ever Talk About is Jazz</a></i>’ (2015 <b>Ocelot Records</b>) as a strictly lyric-free record. Despite the lack of audible content, the 9-track composition flowed effortlessly through a 32 minute melodious journey. Unapologetically it made our <b>Spotify’s</b> list of top listened to albums of 2016 (#1 instrumental band to zone out to IMO - <a href="https://horsemode.bandcamp.com/album/all-you-ever-talk-about-is-jazz" target="_blank">get it fo' free</a> ::at a name your price donation:: on Bandcamp today).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the handicap of being an instrumental band within a quick churn local music scene can hinder the potential for a viable spot on a show or competition, including the notorious <b>Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble</b> which has historically excluded all-instrumental bands to comply with judging criteria.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the year, Horse Mode had positioned itself to gain new opportunities in 2017 by releasing their first recording featuring vocals, a 3-song EP entitled ‘<i>Defenestrator</i>’.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“To be honest, you can only hear, "You guys should add vocals", so many times before you have to consider it,”<b> Ryan Sunderland</b> (drums) explains. “[The band] continues to write songs instrumentally first, but incorporates vocals when we feel they fit. We’ve also added lyrics to a handful of previously released instrumental tracks that we now play live.” Experimenting with writing lyrics to older material, Horse Mode plans to enhance and re-release five songs from ‘<i>All You Ever Talk About is Jazz</i>’ later this year.</div>
<br />
<center>
♜</center>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Based 25 minutes outside of Boston, Horse Mode has been riding the wave of the North Shore music scene resurgence. Sunderland describes the band’s good fortune to have always had a home in Lowell. “When we first began to play in the area we were always welcome and well received at <b>The Last Safe and Deposit Company</b> with <b>Dee Tension</b> booking shows. Since then we've found a new spot at <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/UnchARTed-202386856448988/" target="_blank">UnchARTed</a></b> on Market Street. <b>Michael Dailey </b>has setup a beautiful spot with art, food and talented local musicians.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
In addition to representing the local music scene, Horse Mode alumni have also founded <b>Rock ‘n’ Lowell Fest</b>, an all-day, all-ages event featuring a mix of area and out-of-area bands, so far celebrating two sessions at UnchARTed. “We hosted the second bi-annual event in March and are already planning for the fall. It's a day of music (10 or so bands), pizza (try the Mushy Goat), beer and just a killer time supporting the scene. There are so many great bands from Lowell that we simply can't list them all.”<br />

</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<i>“We think being a singles band is evolutionarily the best thing for most bands. From a culture perspective, it makes sense because things are very content driven and the buzz cycle is short. People expect you to be pumping out new content on a regular basis.”</i> That was <b>Salem Wolves</b> during <a href="http://www.bishopandrook.com/2015/08/refining-formula-salem-wolves-dish-on.html" target="_blank">a 2015 interview with <b>Bishop & Rook</b></a>. Since then, the band has produced a total of 6 singles and 1 EP. But on May 5th, the band prepares to release their first LP, <i>Tooth & Nail </i>(<b>MegaHex Records</b>), a 12-track record that is comprised primarily of previously released songs. So the question we ask is; will <i>Tooth & Nail</i> be enough “new content”?<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<center>
“O<span style="text-align: justify;">ver the last two years, we've really seen our live show become a focus and its connected us with lots of people. So I think the singles approach worked and still works, but maybe isn't the complete picture.</span>” </center>
</blockquote>
<br />
“[<i>Tooth & Nail</i>] is an aggregated snapshot of who we were from when we started to who we are now,” explains Salem Wolves’ frontman <b>Gray Bouchard</b>. “The songs to us feel new because in a way, we're a totally different band than we were in 2015. The record is us giving [the songs] their debutant moment and putting them to bed.” <i>Tooth & Nail</i> is considered an engineered yearbook for the Salem Wolves fanbase and a refined catalog for future listeners. With lineup changes landing <b>Eliahu Sussman</b> (<b>The Tenafly Vipers</b>) on drums and <b>Dan McMahon</b> (<b>Lesser Knowns</b>) on lead guitar/vox, the band went to work completely re-recording three songs from the 2015 EP <i>Black Books </i>and remixing previously released singles, as well as recording a handful of new tracks including "From The Vault" which <a href="https://salemwolves.bandcamp.com/track/from-the-vault" target="_blank">you can stream now</a> on Bandcamp.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I think our attitude has changed from thinking we're a "singles" band to being more of a "live" band,” Bouchard states. “People who have seen us play live may have heard “Rumblr” (2015) dozens of times but never recorded like they’ve heard it live. “Wytches” (2015) in particular is a totally different beast and has a lot of detail and nuance that was missing from the original.” And we agree. 2015 vs. 2017, “Wytches” is now more confident and a bit more menacing; like this track has seen some things, and it’s warning you, not from the shadows of an alley in passing but from atop the bar, smack dab in the middle of spooky town USA. And that’s the type of quality you’re going to get from the entire record. Like many mediums, content is re-released in harder, better, faster, stronger versions, and music should be no exception.<br />
<br />
So as far as strategy goes, yes, it’s changing. Bands get older, they play more shows and they realize what works and what doesn’t. “At the time, songs like "Teenage Wonder" (2015) really kicked down a few doors for us and it was great. It got us out there, taught us who and what we were. But over the last two years, we've really seen our live show become a focus and its connected us with lots of people. So I think the singles approach worked and still works, but maybe isn't the complete picture,” which is a great insight and working example of how bands consciously migrate and mature to better themselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We still love singles for creative and utilitarian reasons. It’s easier, faster and cheaper to record singles vs. a full LP.” But after locking in their lineup, the focus is to start recording the next album and writing it as an album. “We're a much more confident band now and not so concerned with what song are we putting out this month to keep people interested. Maybe you'll get a single beforehand, because we can't help it and they're fun and we like summer bangers.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So is <i>Tooth & Nail</i> enough new content? Yes. It’s worth the investment primarily for the sake that this band quickly propelled through the ranks, realized their potential, reworked their angle, refined their sound and was able to capture the essence of their live show, which if you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing, is voltaic.</div>

Try this Zen Exercise on Your Way to Work.</b>
<br />
Put in your earbuds in.<br /><a href="https://ironelbows.bandcamp.com/track/epicurus" target="_blank">Click play</a> on track “Epicurus”.<br />And just let the music walk with you.<br />Do you feel just the slightest bit more enlightened?</center>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Iron Elbows</b> is a Boston-based experimental guitar/synth brainchild of <b>Derek Hixon</b> (AKA <b>Mint Pillow</b>) and <b>Zac Trainor</b> (AKA <b>Gold Must Die</b>) formed in 2007. The pair combines guitar riffs and rhythms with atmospheric synths and mashed out sounds and minimalist sessions like standout track “Epicurus” on their sophomore album, and <b>Bishop & Rook</b> premiere, ‘<i>Sanity Breath</i>’.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The name of the track was inspired by the <b>Philosopher Epicurus</b>,” Hixon tells Bishop & Rook. “Particularly with his teachings of ataraxia—peace and freedom from fear.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once both situated within the Boston area, Trainor relocated to North Carolina, resulting in a new, almost pen-pal approach to recording their second record.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“A lot of our songs, which are usually between 3-4 minutes, start off as a 20+ minute jams we did together. Recording in the same room is the desire, but it's just not our reality anymore,” Hixon explains of his partner’s relocation to NC. “We can only do the minimal now, so trading tracks is what we started doing which yields different results [than recording together]. You never know which way a track is going to turn when you hand it over and it's fun to hear how the other interpreted what you did. It's similar to the fold-in technique of creating poetry.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In addition to Iron Elbows, the duo maintain passion projects including Hixon’s <b>Visions of the Unexceed</b> Boston music blog and podcast and <b>Mint Pillow</b> DJ nights, and Trainor’s music and visual art.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can catch an all vinyl Mint Pillow DJ set this Thursday July 28th 9PM at<b> State Park</b> in Kendall Square, Cambridge (flyer below). <div style="text-align: justify;">
Celebratory fist pump. <b>Bishop & Rook</b> is pleased to premiere the new <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/chokeupma" target="_blank">Choke Up</a></b> track “Hart", recorded at <b>Converse Rubber Tracks</b> and off <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/disposableamerica/" target="_blank">Disposable America's</a> </b>upcoming benefit mixtape. As expected, Choke Up continues to maintain rank as an exceptionally talented Boston band.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Hart” is one of 26 tracks featured on the Allston-based<b> </b>Disposable America<b> </b>mixtape ‘<i>SPECIAL INTEREST</i>’, out this Friday, July 15th. The compilation is a follow-up to last year’s ‘<i><a href="https://disposableamerica.bandcamp.com/album/and-flowers-and-bees" target="_blank">AND FLOWERS AND BEES</a></i>’, and is comprised entirely of unreleased material from bands either on the label's roster or friends of the label including <b>Soft Fangs</b>, <b>community college</b>, <b>Infinity Girl</b>, <b>Kitner</b>, <b>Strange Mangers</b>, <b>Twin Foxes</b>, and <b>Holiday Music</b>. 100% of the proceeds from '<i>SPECIAL INTEREST</i>' will be donated to the <b>Pulse Tragedy Community Fund</b>. You can <a href="https://disposableamerica.bandcamp.com/album/special-interest" target="_blank">pre-order the new mixtape</a> on Bandcamp for $5 for cassette (limited 100) and $1 for digital download.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“'<i>SPECIAL INTEREST</i>' was originally intended to drop all at once, like a surprise release, but in the wake of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL earlier this year, [Disposable America] felt that there was a more useful way to share the songs and help to raise money for the cause", label founder<b> Dustin Watson</b> tells Bishop & Rook. “The first song we released was <b>Coaches'</b> cover of "What The World Needs Now Is Love," which seemed like a very necessary and relevant song both then and now.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A show featuring mixtape artists is scheduled for July 15th, co-promoted by <b>Show Mom Collective</b> (see flyer below).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In addition to appearing on the DA comp, “Hart” will be available on Choke Up’s upcoming stripped down EP. Track listing below. A preview of “Wildflower” <a href="http://www.bishopandrook.com/2015/11/choke-up-stripped-down-post-hardcore.html" target="_blank">leaked last November.</a> The band will be playing <b>Koto </b>in Salem on Friday, July 15th with <b>DCDR</b>, <b>Heel & Arrow</b>, and <b>The Digs</b> (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1039320899482865/" target="_blank">event details</a>) and are appearing at <b><a href="http://thefestfl.com/" target="_blank">FEST15</a></b> in Gainesville, FL later this fall. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Spin a recent <b>Mr. Vertigo</b> record and be prepared to hear a project that might include up to dozen people, about 20 instruments and roughly a decade of collaborative experience. The alt-rock band (existing in one form or another since 2002) will be celebrating the release of their 7th official record entitled ‘<i>Dreaming on the Left Side</i>’ <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1012615238820364/" target="_blank">Friday, July 8th at <b>O'Brien's Pub</b> in Allston</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<center>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>“We like to look at the studio, itself, as an additional instrument."</i></blockquote>
</center>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each Mr.Vertigo record is composed with the mentality of a rock opera. With an orchestral pit-sized arsenal of instruments, the band is not opposed to sharing the studio with cornets, clarinets, a double bass, glockenspiel and an ambitious array of keys like a mellotron and wurlitzer funmaker. “We like to look at the studio, itself, as an additional instrument,” guitarist/bassist <b>Matthew Hajdys</b> tells <b>Bishop & Rook</b>. “The songs have energy and that energy, along with our wonderful producers, decide what instruments we use to make each track sound as good as they possibly can.” Their wonderful producers are <b>Brian Charles</b> (<b>The Sheila Divine</b>, <b>Dear Leader</b>, <b>The Field Effect</b>) and <b>A.J. Mogis</b> (<b>Bright Eyes</b>, <b>Cursive</b>, <b>Rilo Kiley</b>), working out of at <b>Zippah Recording </b>in Boston and <b>ARC Studios</b> in Omaha, NE.
In some instances, a song will call for outside help such as with the track “No Predicate” featuring fellow Boston musician <b>Abbie Barrett</b>. “We honestly just love the studio and would probably live in one if we could.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<center>
♜</center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As intricate and advanced as a Mr. Vertigo record may sound, songs are never written with the intent to be seven-layers deep. Rather, the band takes an avant-garde approach to recording. “We just write and produce the music that we want. What makes [recording] so fun is the fact that no one’s idea for an arrangement or an instrument is too out there to try,” says Hajdys. He goes on to explain the band tends to “genre jump” quite a bit so as to not limit the creative process. ‘<i>Dreaming on the Left Side</i>’ explores several different areas from straight up power pop “Hi Auntie”, to americana “No Predicate”, garage “Bootprints”, and more experimental tracks such as “Diminishing Light”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Sometimes it’s a wall of sound with a real string section, organ, omnichord, optigan, six guitar tracks, and sometimes it’s just an acoustic guitar, vocals, and the flute patch on a mellotron. I would like to think that if there is one song that may be too intricate for a listener. There is hopefully another song that isn’t so complex that they can enjoy.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With so much to experience, and such a deep catalog to sift through, we can only hope that the next Mr. Vertigo project has then lending their powerful sound to a music video. Any takers? Hit up the band at <a href="mailto:mrvertigomusik@gmail.com">mrvertigomusik@gmail.com</a>.</div>

(We thoroughly enjoyed the band's previous music video for "<a href="http://www.bishopandrook.com/2015/11/air-traffic-controller-releases-music.html" target="_blank">The House</a>" last fall). The audio/visual is for track “On The Wire”, originally premiering on<b> <a href="http://bullettmedia.com/article/air-traffic-controllers-on-the-wire-video-is-a-thelma-louise-inspired-road-trip/" target="_blank">Bullet Media</a></b> and written and directed by <b>Olivia Saperstein</b> and <b>Max Lapointe</b>. </div>

The video depicts a young woman who has had enough of her unhinged relationship and joins up with another spirited wonder on her adventure to experience life in the now. “On The Wire” evokes feelings of relief and freedom, spotted with the tinge of uncertainty as the two characters embark on whatever is to come next. </div>

Varying degrees of delirious carnal lo-fi noise originating from the basements of Allston and perfected in the studios of Somerville/Cambridge, the debut full-length ‘<i>Homesick</i>’ by local act <b>Earth Heart</b> is one primal joyride we’ll keep on repeat this summer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
‘<i>Homesick</i>’ (out August 5th) is the 10-track polished successor of five DIY self-recorded, self-produced EPs; professionally recorded and mixed by <b>Shaun Curran</b> at <b>Napoleon Complex</b> in Somerville, MA and mastered by <b>Nick Zampiello</b> at <b>New Alliance</b> in Cambridge, MA.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Frontwoman <b>Katie Coriander</b> (vox/guitar) handles the expert task of capturing the genre’s dynamic persona both vocally and instrumentally.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While the first single and title track off the LP is certainly saturated in classic lo-fi distortion, it hardly represents the turbulent path this holistic project takes. Standout tracks: “Demons”, “NSA Song”, “Chicken And Rice”.</div>

Google “<b>The Michael Character</b>” and expect to find featured reviews in prominent indie music blogs, a social calendar littered with gigs, an official Reddit band of the month nomination, and yourself with a serious case of early-stage FOMO. Referred to by journalists as “a prolific folk punker” and “(legitimate) activist”*, The Michael Character appears to be the greatest addition to folk punk that you never knew existed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<center>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"I look at songs as ways of initiating difficult conversations with lots of different people simultaneously and indirectly."</i></blockquote>
</center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Musician <b>James Ikeda</b> has produced 7 acoustic punk records under the alias of The Michael Character since 2011 and will be releasing his 8th recording and follow up to the well-received 2015 album '<i>Do Your Work</i>', entitled ‘<i>Wheelie?</i>’ (mixed by <b>Benjamin Greer </b>of <b><a href="http://sunbrewedrecords.com/" target="_blank">Sun Brewed Records</a></b>).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 10-track record continues Ikeda’s style of quick vignettes and radical folk songs, premiering with “26” which talks about the emotionally conflicting phase of “feelin' old at the punk rock show” while “feeling like a kid at the staff party”, but advises that we rise above opinions and just get over it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If your sometimes insecure, kind of blunt, partially reflective, slightly opinionated, fed up 50% of the time inner monologue auditioned for a musical; it might sample a track from a TMC record.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Taking a philosophical approach to advocating the recognition of racism, sexism and social standards, by highlighting inner conflict, and his general observations, The Michael Character often stimulates dialogue by pointing out the methodology for learning from failures, and driving change, but keeps his authoritative tone in check by explaining his lyrics are based on personal experiences.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I look at songs as ways of initiating difficult conversations with lots of different people simultaneously and indirectly. I don't write songs that are just like "screw capitalism, buying an iPhone makes you bourgeois scum!" or whatever, I try to leave room for people to get in on important discussions without relying on the discourse-stifling rhetoric that is so often the downfall of political punk,” Ikeda tells <b>Bishop & Rook</b>. “So yea, I'm about dialogue and swapping experiences rather than selling people something prepackaged and absolute.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<center>
♜</center>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sometimes with lyric-heavy art, a listener can experience a strange phenomenon when a performer’s insecurities can provide introspection and receptive comfort. “Performance is all about vulnerability for me,” Ikeda admits. “Honestly, many of the songs I've written in the last two years have been initially really difficult to perform live because they required me to be uncomfortably forthright about who I am or what I think. You can't really connect with another person unless you are both vulnerable, and if I am vulnerable as a performer that makes it possible for audience members to open up too.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“So much about being a performing artist is inherently narcissistic (at least as I see it) so a performance being useful for someone else in some way is the absolute best case scenario. More than anything else I really hope that people find something to connect with in the new record.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next Boston-area city to participate in organized musical curb appeal is Quincy, holding their very first PorchFest on June 18th from 1P-5P in the Safford Park <b>Wollaston </b>neighborhood, accessible by the Wollaston T stop on the Redline.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ward 3 City Councilor and event Co-Chair<b> Ian Cain</b>, who applied for the special permit for PorchFest on behalf of the <b>Wollaston Hill Neighborhood Association</b>, said the free, all-ages event will “increase community engagement,” reported by <a href="http://www.patriotledger.com/article/20160412/NEWS/160418480" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">The Patriot Ledger</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As with any first-time gig, it appears many details are TBD or highly situational. The event ends at 5P <i>but there could</i> be some encore sessions on various porches, rain date is up in the air, and “the original lead singer of the <b>Dropkick Murphys</b>” and current <b>Street Dogs </b>member, <b>Mike McColgan</b>, is one of the musicians <i>who could perform</i> at the event.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the most important piece of information we’ve found is that Quincy PorchFest hasn’t specifically told us <i><b>not</b></i> to consume alcoholic beverages.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
<i><b>"Beer and Wine? </b>PorchFest does not have an officially contained festival area. The entire event takes place in individually owned yards and the public streets in between. When in public, you are subject to the usual laws regarding alcohol consumption."</i></blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you’re willing to navigate a possible rocky start, Quincy PorchFest <i>could be</i> an entertaining few hours. You can get involved by either performing or hosting a porch by filling out the form found on the official <a href="http://www.wollastonhill.com/porchfest-quincy/" target="_blank">Quincy PorchFest website</a> and get additional details via <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PorchFestQuincy/" target="_blank">Facebook</a>.</div>

We heard lavender lemonade is a really good stress reliever…so we put vodka in it. The May Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out is spiked with bands playing shows around town including <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/211505129231006/" target="_blank">Eldridge Rodriguez</a> </b>at <b>O’Brien’s Pub</b> on May 21st, <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/847351292060461/" target="_blank">Weakened Friends</a></b> playing their record release show on May 22nd at <b>Great Scott</b>,<b> </b>and<b> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/217352135310491/" target="_blank">Le Roxy Pro</a></b> and <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1716936285249736/" target="_blank">Notches</a> </b>both playing on May 23rd at Great Scott and O’Brien’s Pub respectively. (we kept your show recommendations <strike>within stumbling distance</strike> local). #ROWYCO<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 pear, juiced</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 oz vodka</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 ounce lemon juice</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 ounces water</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3/4 oz lavender simple syrup</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
pinch of salt</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 cup sugar</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 cup water</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10-12 stalks fresh lavender or about 1/4 cup dried</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Make lavender syrup by boiling 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and lavender in a pot. Turn to low and simmer for 10 mins. Let cool and strain out lavender. Juice pear and strain any pulp. Combine all remaining ingredients into a shaker and shake. Strain into a tall glass with ice. (yields one large glass, playlist yields 10 songs. recommended amount of glasses, ~10).</div>

'<i>For Adam</i>' is a two-night event in memory of musician <b>Adam Haut</b> (<b><a href="https://civilwarblers.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank">Civil Warblers</a></b> / <b>Matt & Adam</b>) who passed away suddenly last summer from an undiagnosed heart condition. The showcase happens at Great Scott in Allston on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th, features 14 local bands and musicians, and benefits <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Dog-Days-Adoption-Event-133532629991637" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Dog Days Adoption Event Inc.</a>, a non-profit that assists small rescues and pounds to raise awareness of adoptable dogs by way of pop up events.<br />
<br />
"We are beyond adequately expressing our gratitude for being chosen as the recipient of this great outpouring of love and joy, in memory of a young man who adored dogs, nature, music and his friends and family," the organization's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1208400785838144&id=133532629991637" target="_blank">Facebook page states</a>. "Proceeds from this event will go to a fund started last year named "<i>LETS GO</i>" in honor of Adam, and used to pay for dog care expenses when owners can't afford them. Our deepest and most profound "thank you" to the event organizers for including us in this great honor and we wish you the greatest joy as you share memories and create new ones with friends by your side and Adam in your heart."</div>
