Record Premiere: Getting Our Zen on With Iron Elbows and 'Sanity Breath'

Record premiere! 'Sanity Breath' by Iron Elbows

Try this Zen Exercise on Your Way to Work.
Put in your earbuds in.
Click play on track “Epicurus”.
And just let the music walk with you.
Do you feel just the slightest bit more enlightened?

Iron Elbows is a Boston-based experimental guitar/synth brainchild of Derek Hixon (AKA Mint Pillow) and Zac Trainor (AKA Gold Must Die) formed in 2007. The pair combines guitar riffs and rhythms with atmospheric synths and mashed out sounds and minimalist sessions like standout track “Epicurus” on their sophomore album, and Bishop & Rook premiere, ‘Sanity Breath’.

“The name of the track was inspired by the Philosopher Epicurus,” Hixon tells Bishop & Rook. “Particularly with his teachings of ataraxia—peace and freedom from fear.”

Once both situated within the Boston area, Trainor relocated to North Carolina, resulting in a new, almost pen-pal approach to recording their second record.

“A lot of our songs, which are usually between 3-4 minutes, start off as a 20+ minute jams we did together. Recording in the same room is the desire, but it's just not our reality anymore,” Hixon explains of his partner’s relocation to NC. “We can only do the minimal now, so trading tracks is what we started doing which yields different results [than recording together]. You never know which way a track is going to turn when you hand it over and it's fun to hear how the other interpreted what you did. It's similar to the fold-in technique of creating poetry.”

In addition to Iron Elbows, the duo maintain passion projects including Hixon’s Visions of the Unexceed Boston music blog and podcast and Mint Pillow DJ nights, and Trainor’s music and visual art.

You can catch an all vinyl Mint Pillow DJ set this Thursday July 28th 9PM at State Park in Kendall Square, Cambridge (flyer below). Follow Iron Elbows on Facebook and visit the official websites of Visions of the Unexcued, and Zac Trainor for additional information. ‘Sanity Breathis available on Bandcamp for free (at a name your price donation).

Big Time Kill Amps Up Devo's "Girl U Want"

We put synth in yo' synth.

Oh hai you guys, another cover from a local band. Earlier this week we listened to Pulitzer Prize Fighter’s cover of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” and Save End’s rendition of  Jawbreaker’s “Oyster”. Today we’re digging the electro-industrial interpretation of Devo’s “Girl U Want” from noisy synth-fueled rock band Big Time Kill released earlier this year. Look for their debut EP out this summer.

#BandcampRoulette

#BandcampRoulette…things we haven’t done in a while…

Bandcamp Roulette is a game of wits, luck, and perseverance. Log onto Bandcamp.com, pick a tag, any tag, search your guts out, get super discouraged and outraged at what the internet lets people upload, then, when you think all hope is lost, you find something tolerable.

For this edition, we take it back to Boston for an incredibly ridiculous electro/parody track called “Really Cool Wig” off of Lemon Demon’s 2011 Nature Tapes EP. If you enjoy this Weird Al meets Devo stuff, there’s also a song dedicated to Jaws.

'Bike. Barista. Bullshit.' This is Terrible Music

This is a mashup! Download your free copy on Bandcamp today.

Terrible (AKA Max Schaffer) worked as bike messenger for the summer. He drank a lot of coffee. He talked to a lot of baristas. He tried to weed out the bullshit from what he had learned in college. But mostly he just made this album for his friends to dance to.

Like most things, Terrible Music started for shits and giggles and eventually grew into Bike. Barista. Bullshit. (2014), the debut LP featuring 166 sample sources in 50 minutes, all at 130 beats per minute. A project that took 19 years of listening, three months of using (and crashing) Logic, and from what we can tell, a lot of caffeine.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XII

It's beginning to feel a lot like sprummer. Sometimes warm, sometimes cold, sometimes butt sweat hot. New England, you are a menopausal woman. While Boston is figuring out if it's a spring or a summer, do the porch life thing and make June's ROWYCO playlist your background music to outdoor fun times. And while you're being a bunch of classy kids listening to this extra groovy mixtape, have a Betty Ford. And drink responsibly.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. VIII

This month I'm celebrating KSAW 2013! KSAW, pronounced (kay-saw), meaning Kristin's Super Awesome Weekend. Having a birthday the day after any holiday is a drag, let alone national date night, Valentine's Day. Never a fan of the impracticality of stale boxed chocolates, I decided to act like a carnivorous celestial star and took over that half of the week, creating my own person Mardi Gras. And no party is complete without a signature cocktail and a phenomenal playlist! Read on to get both.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. VI

The Ancient Mayan's predicted that the end of the world would happen December 22, 2012. Coincidence it's on a Friday? I think not!
Celebrate the end of world with a Santa Magrarita and an indie/punk/not too sure what category this falls under/rock playlist. Merry Christmas!

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. IV

Rumor has it, due to a less than adequate harvest this year, the price of apple cider will rise. Better stock up if you want to make the October Rock Out With Your Cocktail out drink, Sparkling Chambord Cider. Awesome playlist availability not affected by bad apples.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. III

I have unintentionally acquired a lot of school teacher friends who are pretty much the biggest whine faces on the internets. You are two days into work after a three month vacation. You are not allowed to have a Christmas break count down already! I love you guys, but honestly, screw you. Know how my summer was? It was a big pile of paper work and hearing about how much you love the beach.

This drink is dedicated to all the hardworking office folk like myself who need a break. Forget an apple for the teacher, here's a caramel apple martini for the executive. And a fucking good playlist too.

Rock Out with Your Cocktail Out

To be truthful, the 4th of July is not my favorite holiday. Partly due to the fact that cramming onto a beach to watch fireworks isn't my style. So instead of sporting that Old Navy flag t-shirt and waving around flammable objects, I'm going to hang out on my porch, drink color coordinated cocktails, and listen to good music.

Cheers!
