Recap: The Boston Scene Party Showcase: 3 Nights – 3 Venues – All Local Music

3 nights 3 venues 3 shots 3 beers - The Scene was in Session this September.

You guys, this music is better than what you’re listening to on the radio. And these shows are cheaper than your big venue prices. And the people involved? They’re the best people on the planet because their passionate and excited.

For 3 nights, a group of bloggers, podcasters and promoters worked together under the team name of Boston Scene Party to provide a showcase of local music. Those involved in curating the shows had one simple task, find bands whose music and live shows moved you to the point that you had an overwhelming urge to share their sound.

Here were the results:

NIGHT 1 @ Firebrand Saints (Kendall Square)

Wolf Hongos – Picked by Boston Ska (dot) Net
Genre: Gypsy Punk
Location: Fall River
Label: Unsigned

A band of misfits playing their version of Gogol Bordello-style gypsy punk, Wolf Hongos packed a ruckus of sound into a 30 minute set with chanting lyrics, horns and an accordion.

Art Thieves – Picked by Mutiny on the Microphone
Genre: Punk Rock
Location: Quincy
Label: Unsigned
Facebook
Soundcloud

Playing their last show before heading into the studio to record their debut album, the Quincy punk rockers’ chemistry and charisma combined with catchy tunes made for an entertaining and sometimes audience interacting set.

Grey Season – Picked by Sound of Boston
Genre: Indie Folk Rock
Location: Boston
Label: Unsigned
Facebook
Bandcamp

Their plucky folk rock and charming vocals transcended all musical preferences. For a band as young as Grey Season is, their tight and well-polished sound is almost beyond comprehension.

NIGHT 2 @ O’Brien’s Pub (Allston)

Curated by Lysten Boston

Everything and Everyone
Genre: Indie Rock
Location: Boston
Label: Disposable America
Facebook
Bandcamp

Breezy and honest indie rock with a touch of twang a bit of pop.

The Symptoms
Genre: Experimental Pop
Location: Boston
Label: Unsigned
Facebook
Bandcamp

Moody, shoegaze, experimental pop sounds translated into an accelerated high energy live set. The college-aged band crooned, shouted and danced around stage in a manic manner that we can only describe as “The Symptoms Shuffle”.

FLORIO
Genre: Synth Pop
Location: Boston
Label: Unsigned
Facebook
Bandcamp

Hearts on their sleeves and loud as hell, this synth band proved they could fit into a variety of genre lineups. Completing their set with a cover of Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” solidified our commitment in seeing this band again, and again, and again.

Arms and Ears
Genre: Indie Pop Rock
Location: Boston
Label: Unsigned
Facebook
Bandcamp

A cross between Radiohead and Group Love, every song from Arms and Ears should be in a motion picture soundtrack or in an Apple commercial.

NIGHT 3 @ Charlie’s Kitchen (Harvard Square)

Curated by Bishop & Rook

Me In Capris
Genre: Indie Pop Rock
Location: Boston
Label: Unsigned
Tumblr
Bandcamp

We came for the comedy, we stayed for the music; everyone needs to see Me In Capris live. Part band, part stand-up, lead singer Adam Demirjian shot quick-witted comments into the crowd in-between songs off their debut album ‘For Those Who Think You’ and spontaneous attempts at covers.

Twin Foxes
Genre: Garage Emo
Label: Disposable America
Location: Providence, RI
Facebook
Bandcamp

Twin Foxes delivered a distorted and fluid garage / emo set. Guitar heavy and rhythmic, the Scene Party Showcase’s second Disposable America band represented Providence, RI and the breadth of the New England music scene.

Tied to a Bear
Genre: Punk Rock
Label: Discuss & Disregard
Location: Boston
Facebook
Bandcamp

Closing out the night and ending the 3-night 3-venue showcase, established punk rockers in Tied to a Bear performed an aggressive and dynamic set of tracks off their highly anticipated debut LP ‘Safe, Boring & Safe’.
