Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XXVIII

You're Not My Real Dad cocktail, garnished with a cigarette (image credit)

We went to Portland, Oregon and all I got was an ironic, thrift store t-shirt. Portland is exactly what I think a town would be like if it were run by children. Every restaurant serves pizza, burgers and macaroni and cheese. If it’s at all possible to put a car seat on a unicycle, someone in Portland will do it first. A ridiculous, pretentious town were people say idiotic things like “I’m pretty religious about cassette tapes” and homelessness is the final stage of hipster. Needless to say, you’re better off staying in Seattle.

But if you must visit, check out the Sapphire Hotel for a “You’re Not My Real Dad” cocktail. A cerveza that up until recently, was garnished with a cigarette. Turns out you legally cannot do that. Or you can just grab the recipe after the jump, turn on Portlandia and rock out to the October playlist featuring Weird Womb, LVL UP, Black Beach and No Bails.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XXVII

Cider Sangria l Bishop And Rook Boston Music Blog
Welcome Freshmen! Here's a drink, and some music, and a bunch of shows you should go to.

Man I'm going to miss the abundance of parking I've grown accustom to over the past few months, but if it means more kids in the clubs, then by all means, move right on in. While you're screwing together your MALMS or BESTÅS or whatever other IKEA item you inevitably will toss after the school year, take a break now and then for a glass of hard apple cider sangria and a new music playlist.

While the venues may be parched due to festival season, we have some mew music for your listening pleasure including tunes from Geronimo!, Atlantic Thrills, Slothrust, Speaker for the Dead and Zooparty. Plus, the July 2014 cocktail, straight from our love affair with gin, the Salty Dog.

In the News: Sharks and Beer

A Great White Shark was spotted off the shores of Cape Cod [VIDEO]. In other news, Narragansett re-releases the iconic 1975 can from ‘Jaws’. Discuss.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XXIV

Looks like coffee. Tastes like delicious.

I recently read an article about how it's 'finally iced coffee season'. Clearly that person was never inches away from certain death by snow plow while en route to the 24 hour Dunkin' Donuts for some cold brew during a blizzard. But now that it is "socially acceptable" to drink your coffee over ice, why not add some Frangelico? And I mean, since you're on your wild streak, you might as well listen to new music by The Bamboos, Masked Intruder, Speedy Ortiz, White Murder and Dry Heeves. Drink up. Press play. Get down with your bad self.

Allston Gets a Bit More Awesome During Awesome Day Fest

15 Bands, 3 Stages, One Awesome Day in Allston (Poster design by Z*L's Ian Adams)

Jesse Sherman of Boston band, Tired Old Bones, and Cameron Keiber of boutique label Midriff Records, along with O’Brien’s Pub, Regina Pizzeria, Store 54 and Narragansett Beer present Awesome Day Fest in Allston Rock City on May 24th. Originally orchestrated by Sherman, Awesome Day has historically been an all-day affair at the charming O’Brien’s Pub, complete with copious amounts of BBQ on the back patio and a stage full of the best rock Boston has to offer.

This year, however, Awesome Day Fest transforms into a tri-venue experience with the addition of TWO MORE STAGES. Three times the music, three times the beer, just remember to cross with the crosswalk.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XXIII

A Gin Gimlet because we're turn of the century classy folks who like new music. (image credit)

Hanging on the porch, listening to new music, sipping on gin and juice. That’s how it goes right? First all the of the snow, now all of the rain. But that’s not stopping us from cleaning off the patio furniture and buying citronella candles. WE WILL DAY DRINK ON OUR PORCH THIS MONTH. And we shall do it with a Gin Gimlet while listening to the May Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out playlist featuring Plague Vendor, Mean Creek, The Okay Win, Banner Pilot and PINS.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XXI

Petite, delicious, punk rock. Oi Oi Oi! (Image credit)

Do you suffer from Chronic Polar Vortex Syndrome? Symptoms include numbness, loss of balance and weeklong Netflix binges. If so, non-medical tests have concluded that music and alcohol can help! Our "all lion, no lamb" March Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out playlist is an ideal addition to any Hashtag Fuck Snow party and includes locals like Ghost Thrower, Twin Berlin and OC45 (they all have shows coming up, go to them). Plus get seasonal with a Baby Guinness shot, a delicious concoction we first had while hanging out with Joe Sib and Dave Hause at Highland Kitchen after their set at the Somerville Armory a few years back. Cheers!

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XVI

Get fancy - use a glass. (image credit)

Pumpkin domination. A lot of October cocktails floating around the internets these days call for Black Vodka, which I've already decided tastes like black licorice and food coloring. Keep it simple with pumpkin beer while staying classy with fancy glasses. And keep it eerie with the October playlist featuring local Boston bands Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion and Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XIV

Shabu-Zen hot pot in Allston has a beer and wine license only. But they get away with making a mean sake mojito. This got me thinking of additional sake substituting, and then I found the Cherry Sake Cocktail on fancy-edibles.com. Life is about loopholes. And good music. The August Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out playlist features a little bit of surfs up, a little bit of your girlfriend and a little bit of Boston, with local bands Bodega Girls, Guillermo Sexo, The Okay Win and Rebuilder.

Rock Out With Your Cocktail Out Vol. XIII

Happy July to my favorite audiophiles and alcoholics! A playlist made perfect for your backyard grilling pleasure featuring some recent bands I had the pleasure of seeing in person including Count to Four, Crimes and Await Rescue, and some favorite new songs from Marnie Stern, Said the Whale and The Boxer Rebellion. This month's featured cocktail comes courtesy of Somerville Food Blogger, Culinary Colleen. Turn it up and make yourself a pomegranate cosmopolitan. Because we're fancy and antioxidants are good for us.
Sassy and sophisticated and all about the music.
