Yeehaw! Gets! Punk! With! Rock! Songs!

Grab your copy of 'Rock Songs' now on Bandcamp.

Short, surly and catchy as fuck - Yeehaw! picks up the pace with a more refined and cohesive pop punk sound on their sophomore EP ‘Rock Songs’.

Evolving songs like “What Now” and “Pixie” from the 2014 record ‘Demotivational Speaker’, the gritty and punchy 7-track ‘Rock Songs’ is packed with post-adolescent blues and plows through 13 minutes and 41 seconds with enough effort to articulate how Berklee expensive university degrees can get you about as far as your parents’ couch.

With a comparable sound to mid-era Pulley or Lagwagon, more often than not, we’ve thought, “What does this song sound like? Oh, it sounds like a Yeehaw! song.” Written by a young band, the lyrics reflect the early stages of realizing the majority of people you know will forgo big dreams for reasonable lifestyles. Just wait until those people start to live vicariously through you and ask if you’ve been to a "rock concert" lately while their eyes glaze over with any vague attempt of yours to explain what you do. I digress.

The EP is available on Bandcamp for free (at a name your price donation). But throw the kids a couple bucks, it’s a good record and we heard Sallie Mae is an aggressive pimp. Cassette tapes can be purchased for $4 via Broken World Media.

The band will celebrate their record release and the kickoff to their Summer! Tour! this Friday, July 24th at The Democracy Center in Harvard Square with Just Friends, Perspective, A Lovely Hand to Hold, Choke Up and Hoover Flags (event details here). Follow Yeehaw! on Facebook and Twitter for additional information.

The single is the second track to be released off their future full-length, due out spring of 2016, produced by Elio DeLuca (Titus Andronicus, Hallelujah the Hills) and supported by Spark and Fizz Records. Big Time Kill Amps Up Devo's "Girl U Want"

We put synth in yo' synth.

Oh hai you guys, another cover from a local band. Earlier this week we listened to Pulitzer Prize Fighter’s cover of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” and Save End’s rendition of  Jawbreaker’s “Oyster”. Today we’re digging the electro-industrial interpretation of Devo’s “Girl U Want” from noisy synth-fueled rock band Big Time Kill released earlier this year. Look for their debut EP out this summer.

All ‘Dressed Up Like Armageddon’ With No Place To Go - New Punk From Grenades in the Archives

Download your free copy of 'Dressed Up Like Armageddon' now.

Loud, dirty and distorted – Grenades in the Archives’ 2015 EP ‘Dressed Up Like Armageddon’ is a continuation of the punk rock mayhem from their breakout introductory 2014 EP, ‘Tokyo’, both of which are available for free (at a name your price donation) on Bandcamp.

"There must be a glitch in the system cause all this data’s corrupted.
This is all a dream and I've still wasted it anyway."
-Glitch In The System

We received this record in March and haven’t been able to review it until damn near May because we had to press "replay" a whole bunch of times. It’s a quick one. The 7-song record, clocking in at 15:28, is comprised of tantrum-like punk tracks that have the attention span and elegance of a wino lost in IKEA on a Tuesday afternoon (hey, we don’t judge how you use your paid time off).

Frontman, Matt Ozelius’ vocals are a mix between a condescending proclamation and nonchalant banter as he spews lyrics about conflicts, personal reflection and the broken system. Typical talking points that never go out of style.

The band is still finding their footing with 'Dressed Up Like Armageddon'. With four extra songs on EP #2, they start to develop smart, initial concepts and just need to pull it in a little bit tighter. All the more reason to keep Grenades on your radar. What compliments this record is the band’s on-stage energy, which looks like this. You can witness it for yourself by stopping by O’Brien’s Pub in Allston this Sunday (4/26) when GITA play with Off Grove and InCircles (NY). 21+/ $7/8PM doors/event details.

#BandcampRoulette – Snowed in Edition

Hey guys, we found new music for you!

Fun fact. Many local music entities including Allston Pudding, WMBR’s Pipeline! and yours truly scour Bandcamp to find the next best Boston band. As the rules of Bandcamp Roulette suggest, it’s a tough job. But then you stumble upon a record with extreme potential like this Demo from Laika's Orbit, released in January of this year.

Spunky indie pop, tagged as “diet punk”, whatever the fuck that is, Laika’s Orbit is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise blizzardy wasteland of internet uploads.

Yeah it’s muffled, and sure they list upcoming shows, but where Laika’s Orbit, where?! Of course they don’t seem to have a social media page as far as we can tell, but we’re hooked. Listen and download for free on Bandcamp, and see Laika's Orbit in Brooklyn 1/31, Cambridge 2/5 and Allston 2/20. Locations TBD/unknown/super secret/ask a punk?

Overseas, Diger, Old Flings and Camiches Release International 4-way Split

Costa Rican pop punk bands Overseas and Diger have collaborated with Old Flings (NC) and Camiches (Mexico City) to release an international DIY 4-way split.

A combination of networking and touring brought these four bands together. “Overseas and Diger share the same drummer. I'm booking a Central American tour for Camiches in July and they’re booking a Mexican tour for Overseas and Diger in September,” explains Overseas bassist, Alejandro Guerrero. As for the American band, “We played the same show [with Old Flings] in Montreal in 2014 at Pouzza Fest, as soon as the idea of the split came out I contacted them and they really liked it.”

The unique record contains four tracks, layered in English and Spanish, created by bands with similar sounds and a desire to spread awareness of new music from various countries.

4 Way Split can be downloaded for free on Bandcamp.

Metal Break - Veteran Boston Rockers Create Worshipper

Score free metal. Download the 2-song single from Worshipper now.

Maybe the Boston Music Awards' Metal category will get some new blood this year.

As a newly-forged brainchild of veteran Boston rockers John Brookhouse (Rule, The Dirty Truckers), Dave Jarvis (Mellow Bravo), Bob Maloney (Cult 45, Cracktorch, Slim Jim & The Mad Cows), and Alejandro Necochea (Bang Camaro, Township), metal band Worshipper plays the kind of darkly epic rock that can only be found in the vinyl collection of your “cool uncle.”

It’s melodic, it’s driving, it’s legendary; it’s what I picture Vikings listening to. Hungry, sleep-deprived Vikings who are on an infinite quest to find the 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts but a drunk girl gave them the wrong directions and there is absolutely no cell phone service! For context, let’s call this deceitful place Marlborough, Massachusetts! It’s also going to share a stage with the glitter glam pop sounds of Sidewalk Driver on Saturday, January 17th at The Sinclair in Harvard Square, Cambridge. Sure, why not.

Worshipper currently has a two-song single available on Bandcamp as a free download (at a name your price donation). Get familiar with the band now, then see them on Saturday with Sidewalk Driver, The Organ Beats and Leo*Leo, presented by Indie Rock Ranger. Full event details here. Follow the band on Facebook and Twitter for additional release and show information.

'Going van Gogh' - Terrible Has an Ear for Music

Download the second record from local mashup artist, Terrible.

In-between school and his part-time gig as a radio DJ for The Record Hospital on WHRB 95.3 FM (Harvard Radio Broadcasting), Max Schaffer makes Terrible Music.

The New York mashup artist, now residing in Cambridge, has followed up the 2014 Terrible debut record, Bike. Barista. Bullshit, with Going van Gogh.

The roughly 46 minute concoction that took four months to create features over 200 samples of retro, rap, indie, pop and rock songs (increasing his reach from last year’s 166 samples). “I’m super excited to release it,” Terrible says. “I think it’s exponentially better than the last album.”

Thoroughly entertaining and something for everyone; if you ever wanted to know how Foster the People, Gorillaz and Fat Boy Slim synch up, you should listen to Going van Gogh. Download your free copy on Bandcamp or Soundcloud today.

Terrible is always looking for new to sample. Submit your music and band contact information to musicterrible@gmail.com. And follow Terrible on Facebook for additional information.

The Velvet Hands - “La Belle et la Bête”

Time for some free music from across the pond.

#BandcampRoulette #SoundCloudRoulette! More accurately, SoundCloud submission that we really liked.

The Velvet Hands is a four-piece band (with a singer who strikes a shocking resemblance to Alex from Target) from Cornwall, England, that will probably most likely not come to Boston anytime soon, but hey, you can still download this track for free.

“Described as ‘Cornwall’s latest snotty kids on the block’ by Lee Trewhela of [presumably very important British paper] Cornish Guardian.” Super megastar British paper also reports that The Velvet Hands is comprised of teenagers. If you like The Libertines, English accents and new music, you’ll like “La Belle et la Bête” off of the 2014 S/T EP by The Velvet Hands. Download your copy today. Bollox.

'Bike. Barista. Bullshit.' This is Terrible Music

This is a mashup! Download your free copy on Bandcamp today.

Terrible (AKA Max Schaffer) worked as bike messenger for the summer. He drank a lot of coffee. He talked to a lot of baristas. He tried to weed out the bullshit from what he had learned in college. But mostly he just made this album for his friends to dance to.

Like most things, Terrible Music started for shits and giggles and eventually grew into Bike. Barista. Bullshit. (2014), the debut LP featuring 166 sample sources in 50 minutes, all at 130 beats per minute. A project that took 19 years of listening, three months of using (and crashing) Logic, and from what we can tell, a lot of caffeine.
